Sister City Timeline

• 1989: 46 students, parents and teachers have home stay with the Concord- Carlisle High School and Concord Academy.

• 1992: Concord Minutemen serve at opening ceremony of Hokkaido Week.

• 1992: Governor Yokomichi and delegation tour Concord, see former home of William Wheeler and attend potluck supper at the Concord Museum.

• 1993: Nanae sends a delegation of thirteen to Concord, including their mayor and superintendent of schools, to discuss the possibility of a sister-city relationship with Concord.

• 1994: Thoreau School sends videotape, artwork and artifacts to Onuma Elementary School in Nanae.

• 1994: Nanae sends delegation of four to Concord, brings artwork and other gifts to Thoreau School.

• 1995: Seven Concord citizens, including two educators, visit Nanae after attending Massachusetts-Hokkaido Sister State Fifth Anniversary Celebration in Sapporo. Meet Concord Nanae Network and bring gifts from Concord Public Schools to Nanae schools to further the sister school relationships.

• 1995: Nanae sends five middle school students, a teacher and the school superintendent to the Concord Middle School for a four-day
exchange and home stay. Articles brought to Thoreau and Willard Schools.

• 1995: Concord-Carlisle hosts five Hokkaido students and two Sapporo parents association members for four-day home stay as part of larger Hokkaido visit to Massachusetts.

• 1995: Barbara Lehn’s Willard School class sends Haiku to Togeshita School.

• 1995: Tom Curtin wins first place in Massachusetts Community Television Contest–educational, instructional, community volunteer category for “Hokkaido Pioneers”

• 1996: Nanae builds snow sculpture of Concord Public Library for Winter Snow Festival.

• 1996: Nancy Dillon’s Willard School class sends scrapbook and videotape of classroom and trip to Town Forest to the Togeshita School.

• 1996: Nanae hosts Geraldine Alias (CA’96) and Kari Bratzler (CCHS’98).

• 1996: Concord Nanae Network (Concord citizen friends group) hosts five Nanae women for three-day home stay.

• 1996: Concord Public Schools hosts five Nanae middle school students, one teacher, an interpreter and a town government official for four days.

• 1996: Concord Public Library– “Hokkaido Pioneers” photo exhibit featuring William Wheeler’s Hokkaido photos from the 1870’s.

• 1997: Concord-Carlisle High School Art Gallery– “Hokkaido Pioneers” photo exhibit featuring William Wheeler’s photos from the 1870’s.

• 1997: Concord Town Meeting votes to formalize sister-city relationship with Nanae Town.

• 1997: Dr. Robert Furey, Concord-Carlisle High School Social Studies Department Chairman, and Janet Furey attend week-long Pacific Educational Conference organized by the Federation of Hokkaido Senior High School Parent-Teachers’ Associations, then visit Nanae.

• 1997: Nanae sends five middle school students, two high school students, a teacher, an interpreter, a town official, and a citizen for five days.

• 1997: Concord delegation goes to Nanae for signing ceremony of the Concord-Nanae sister-city agreement.

• 1998: CCHS Concert and Jazz Bands’ Japan Trip to Hokkaido in April includes visits to Sapporo and Nanae.

• 1998: Kathryn Vandever, CCHS ‘93, takes year-long job working for Nanae Town to further the two towns’ sister city relationship.

• 1998: Nanae sends five middle school students, two high school students, a teacher, and two citizens for five days in October.

• 1998: Nanae Mayor Mizushima leads an official town delegation of nine to Concord in October, festivities overseen by the Selectmen.

• 1998: Concord hosts official delegation from Hokkaido to Massachusetts at First Parish Church.

• 1999: Alcott and Fujishiro Elementary Schools exchange gifts, Alcott School develops web site and exchanges e-mails as part of sister school relationship.

• 1999: Monica Terry, CCHS ‘93, replaces Katherine Vandever in Nanae Town International Office for the 1999-2000 year.

• 1999: Nanae sends five middle school students, three high school students, one teacher, and two citizens for five days in October.

• 1999: Nanae sends one student for one month to CCHS. She was hosted by the family she stayed with when she came to CMS and by the family of the student she hosted when the band went to Nanae.

• 2000: Monica Terry signs on for another year at the Nanae Town Office.

• 2000: Five Nanae citizens come to Massachusetts to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the sister-state relationship. Visit Concord for two days, including Concord 365th, Selectmen, and schools.

• 2000: Hokkaido Parent-Teacher Association (Ko-P-Ren) sends 23 students and 2 adults for five days of homestays and school visits.

• 2000: Nanae sends five middle school students, three high school students, one teacher, and two citizens for five days in October.

• 2001 Three member Concord delegation attends celebration of Tenth Anniversary of the Massachusetts Hokkaido Sister State Relationship in Sapporo, followed by a visit to Nanae.

• 2001 Five CCHS and CMS teachers visit Sapporo, Nanae, and other Hokkaido sites to make arrangements for future band, outdoor education, student, and teacher trips for 2002 and 2003.

• 2001 CCHS junior Elissa Furutani visits Nanae

• 2001 Tom and Susan Bates and family visit Nanae on way to Sapporo

• 2002 Emily Farrow replaces Monica Terry at Nanae Town Office.

• 2002 Nanae sends five middle school students, three high school students, one teacher, and two citizens for five days in June to visit the Concord Middle School and CCHS.

• 2002 Mr. Watanabe, a Nanae Assemblyman, visits Concord with family members informally.

• 2002 Nanae official delegation of 18 adults, including Mayor Mizushima, and eight students visit Concord for the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the Sister City Affiliation in October.

• 2003 CCHS Concert and Repertory Band hosts 90 member Sapporo Shiiroishi High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble–Play Symphony Hall in January.

• 2003 CCHS 90 member Concert Band plans to visit Nanae and Sapporo during April vacation. Trip cancelled because of SARS and war in Iraq.

• 2003 Eight students and three adults from Nanae visit CCHS in October.

• 2004 CCHS 90 member Concert Band goes to Nanae and Sapporo during April vacation.

• 2004 CCHS graduate Burton Bates replaces Emily Farrow in the Nanae Town International Affairs Office.

• 2004 Nanae sends a delegation of nine adults and seven students to CCHS and Concord, including a visit to the Alcott School.

• 2005 Togeshita School in Nanae sends a package of posters to Willard School.

• 2005 Willard teacher Sue Guest’s third grade class sends package to the Togeshita Elementary School

• 2005 Concord sends a delegation of eleven including two selectmen, the superintendent of schools, seven teachers from all levels, and one citizen to Nanae in July to visit schools.

• 2005 After visiting Nanae in July, the above delegation continued on to Sapporo to present gifts to the Hokkaido Government from the Massachusetts Hokkaido Association and the Town of Concord in honor of the Fifteenth Anniversary of the Massachusetts Hokkaido Sister State Relationship.

• 2005 Nanae sends its annual October delegation consisting of seven students, two town office staff, one teacher and a citizen. The delegation also participated in the celebration of the fifteenth anniversary of the sister state relationship at the Massachusetts State House. Adults visit Thoreau School.

• 2005 Concord hosts Mr. Masafumi Nakagaki of the Hokkaido Massachusetts Association and members of his delegation.

• 2006 Concord visits Nanae in July with another teacher delegation to further the sister school relationships that have been developed and to plan for the CCHS Concert Band trip in April 2007

• 2006 Nanae sends its annual October delegation consisting of seven students, Mayor Nakamiya and his wife, one Nanae Town staff member, one teacher and three citizens. Delegation visits Willard School.

• 2007 CCHS 90 member Concert Band goes to Nanae and Sapporo during April vacation.

• 2007 Nanae sends its annual October delegation consisting of seven students, two Nanae Town staff members, one teacher and three farmers.

• 2007 The four evening Wheeler Forum covers the life of Concordian William Wheeler, including his time and accomplishments in
Japan.

• 2008 The 90 member Sapporo Shiroishi Symphonic Wind Ensemble returns to Concord for home stays and a joint concert with the CCHS Concert Band at Boston’s Symphony Hall.

Many Concord-Carlisle High School and Concord Public School exchanges and activities have been coordinated by Tom Curtin (CCHS Guidance Department, retired) and Sue Curtin (Concord Middle School Social Studies Department, retired). CCHS Concert Band trips have been coordinated by Tom Curtin and CCHS Band Director Al Dentino. Since 2005, CCHS English teacher David Nurenberg has had ongoing exchanges between his Sci Fi Club students and students at Nanae High School and the Sapporo Shiroishi High School.

Town events have been coordinated by the Concord-Carlisle Nanae Network (CCNN), a volunteer citizens organization formally designated by the Town to oversee the sister-city relationship.
